What Should Be Considered in Steel Structure Workshop Design?
What should really be considered when designing a steel structure factory building? With the development of industrial modernization, steel has evolved from being only a load-bearing material to one of the most popular modern building systems. At the same time, requirements for factory construction are becoming increasingly higher. Compared with traditional construction methods, steel structure factories offer more outstanding advantages and are widely favored by contractors and project owners. So what key factors should be considered in steel structure factory design?

Steel structure factory buildings are lightweight, high in strength, and capable of large spans. Their construction period is short, and all components can be prefabricated in factories, enabling industrialized production and reducing overall investment costs. In addition, steel structure factories have excellent seismic performance and can withstand earthquakes up to magnitude 8. They are also environmentally friendly, as construction and dismantling are simple, fast, and efficient, reducing the use of sand, stone, and cement, and supporting sustainable development.
The first key issue in steel structure factory design is load-bearing capacity. The building must withstand construction loads, rainwater, dust, snow loads, and maintenance loads. The load-bearing performance of metal roofing panels depends on factors such as cross-sectional design, material strength and thickness, load transfer method, and purlin spacing. Therefore, structural load design must be carefully calculated during the design stage.
Since steel structure factories usually cover large areas, lighting is another critical concern. In industrial plants, proper lighting is essential for production efficiency. Natural lighting can be improved through skylights during daytime, helping to reduce energy consumption. Light panels or skylight glass can be installed at specific roof positions. However, the service life of skylights must be coordinated with the metal roofing system, and proper waterproof treatment must be applied at all connection points between skylights and roof panels.
Fire protection design is also a crucial factor in steel structure factories. Fire hazards are a major risk during operation. When steel components are exposed to high temperatures, their strength and yield capacity will decrease, which may lead to structural collapse. Therefore, fire-resistant coatings must be applied to improve the fire rating of the structure and enhance safety in case of fire.
Most steel structure factories are used as production workshops. During operation, noise is often generated. To prevent sound transmission between indoor and outdoor environments, insulation materials are typically filled inside the metal roof system, commonly using thermal insulation wool. The sound insulation performance is measured by the decibel difference between both sides of the roof system. The effectiveness of sound insulation depends on the density and thickness of the insulation material. It should also be noted that different frequencies of sound have different insulation effects.
